Development of a Technology for the Fabrication of Devices on Epitaxial Graphene

Job description:

Graphene, an atomically flat layer of carbon atoms arranged on a honeycomb lattice, has recently attracted a lot of attention. Indeed, this material features a specific band structure which is at the origin of many exciting transport properties, such as quantum effects that can persist at room temperature.

Therefore, it is the subject of intense and competitive research. Up to now, most of the experiments on graphene layers have been performed on small flakes obtained from exfoliated graphite and transferred on an insulating substrate. Another technique, more suitable to the formation of large sheets of graphene, uses a sublimation process to leave (1-10) epitaxial graphene sheets at the surface of SiC wafers.

Since 2005, many groups have been studying exfoliated and epitaxial graphene in Grenoble. They are joining there efforts within a common project, DISPOGRAPH, that has received financial support from the Nanosciences Foundation.

One aim of this project is to fabricate test devices able to exploit graphene exceptional properties. This requires the mastering of material quality, based on growth optimization combined to material characterisation as well as fundamental studies to improve our understanding of graphene physical and electronic properties. The building blocks of a generic graphene-based technology will be developed in parallel, with the aim of allowing study of transport properties in gated graphene structures. Modelling will cover all the experimental issues. Experimental and theoretical works will be made in close relationship.
